“Once you failed and admitted it publicly, it’s a lot easier to say: ‘That doesn’t feel as scary to me anymore, it’s okay to fail.’”
We typically only hear news about startups successfully raising venture capital or getting acquired, but what about the ones that fail? No entrepreneur ever starts a company expecting to fail, yet over 80% of them do. Fear of failure is widespread and causes people a great deal of anxiety and stress. But what if we learned to celebrate failure more? On a personal level, failure can be liberating and empowering. A learning experience and a compass for future self-development.
This week on The Global League of Women Podcast, Sapna Shah shared how the failure of her startup in 2013 caused her deep insecurity about her next career steps. But after a serendipitous conversation advising a friend about a potential investment, she soon found herself becoming even more interested in investing in startups. Today, she is a professional angel investor and founder of Retail X, an event series and community supporting retail founders.
Sapna’s journey is a reminder that our failures can result in many unexpected benefits. She has even more empathy for founders now, and knows what it takes to support a successful company.
In This Episode, You Will Learn:
Why hard work alone does not lead to success
The importance of saying “yes” to new opportunities
Why diverse founding teams are more successful
The changes in the retail industry due to Coronavirus
🔥Voices That Inspire
Reading: Untamed by Glennon Doyle
“When a woman finally learns that pleasing the world is impossible, she becomes free to learn how to please herself.”
Listening: Kings & Queens by Ava Max
If all of the kings had their queens on the throne
We would pop champagne and raise a toast
To all of the queens who are fighting alone
Baby, you're not dancin' on your ownDisobey me, then baby, it's off with your head
Gonna change it and make it a world you won't forget
No damsel in distress, don't need to save me
Once I start breathin' fire, you can't tame me
And you might think I'm weak but that is so wrong
But I'm stronger than I ever was before
Video: Smile by Lady Gaga
“Smile though your heart is aching
Smile even though it's breaking
When there are clouds in the sky you'll get by
If you smile through your fear and sorrow
Smile and maybe tomorrow
You'll see the sun come shining through
For you”
Be safe and sending you love,
